Quark Inc. today announced that Guernsey Press Co. is upgrading to QuarkXPress 6.5 and replacing its old editorial workflow solution with the Adapt Technology Editorial system from Press Computer Systems (PCS). The company contracted PCS to install a 50-user editorial system, which has replaced a 9-year-old legacy system and included upgrading software to QuarkXPress 6.5. The new solution runs on the Apple Macintosh client platform - the preferred platform of the Guernsey Press - with the latest-specification G5-based computers running Mac OS X.

Guernsey Press is part of The Guiton Group, which includes the Jersey Evening Post. Guernsey Press publishes a daily newspaper, the Guernsey Press and Star, which is read by more than 80% of the population of the British Channel Islands. It also publishes a weekly subscription title, the Guernsey Weekly Press, and a weekly free publication, The Globe.

"QuarkXPress has been our page layout tool of choice for many years at Guernsey Press," said Richard Digard, Guernsey Press editor. "By upgrading to QXP 6.5, we are now using the latest in page layout software, bringing us more creative freedom as well as efficiency in our day-to-day business"

Digard was especially impressed with the native PDF support in QuarkXPress 6.5, which has enabled the Guernsey Press to move to an all-PDF workflow and freed the company’s live and archive servers from storing heavy loads of EPS files. Digard also said that users are benefiting from functionalities such as comprehensive support for native Photoshop files and image optimisation utilities. He and his team also appreciate the way QuarkXPress 6.5 and the latest Mac OS computers complement each other.

QuarkXPress 6.5 is the current version of the award-winning page layout software and includes a number of new and enhanced time-saving features, such as support for native Adobe Photoshop files, image optimisation features, non-destructive image effects and filters, synchronised text features, and project and layout spaces. Last month, Quark announced a promotion that enables customers to purchase new QuarkXPress 6.5 licenses or upgrade existing QuarkXPress licenses to QuarkXPress 6.5 licenses and purchase QuarkXPress 7 for just £49 when it ships later this year. The promotion is available through Quark resellers across Europe and directly from Quark. "PCS has worked closely with Quark for many years, successfully delivering innovative solutions to the newspaper industry," said Jerry Hedges, managing director at PCS. "We’re delighted that Guernsey Press has chosen to continue with QuarkXPress and for the opportunity to strengthen the working relationship we have with Quark."

The Adapt solution, which includes Editorial, Production, and Planning modules, can combine into one workflow, or users can purchase the modules as standalone solutions and easily integrate them with other third-party systems. A genuine multi-platform, media-independent system, Adapt supplies a truly configurable workflow that synchronises users, departments, and disciplines. It integrates with QuarkXPress and now integrates with Microsoft Word for editorial input.
